Pantex Plant has served as the nation's primary nuclear weapon assembly, disassembly, and life-extension center since the 1970s, and stores/surveils plutonium pits recovered from retired weapons. The prior operator, Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (which also runs the Y-12 site), continued operations through the transition and was required to offer PXD employment to its existing workforce at current pay levels.
