Methodology

How the index is built

Every record is sourced, cited, and maintained through a public methodology — so you can trace any claim to its origin.

Data Sources

Every record in Defense Tech Atlas is built from publicly available sources. We aggregate across: - U.S. government contract databases (USAspending.gov, SAM.gov, SBIR/STTR awards) - European defence agency publications (European Defence Fund, EDIRPA, EDIS, PESCO) - Company press releases and SEC filings - Venture funding announcements from reputable industry media - Specialised defence journalism (Breaking Defense, Defense One, Defense News) - Institutional databases (SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, IISS Military Balance) - Fund and founder public disclosures (firm websites, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Pitchbook) We do not use classified, proprietary, or non-public information.

Update Cadence

The index operates on a continuous review cycle: - **Daily**: AI agents monitor official channels (DoD contract announcements, Commission press releases, company news) for new records or changes - **Weekly**: An editorial pass reviews flagged updates, adds new entities, and refreshes cap tables around announced funding rounds - **Monthly**: Full cross-entity consistency check (a new company → link to its founders, investors, contracts)

Editorial Selection

The index covers the defence technology ecosystem with a focus on venture-backed and high-growth companies. Our editorial scope includes: - **Companies**: startups and scale-ups where defence/dual-use is a primary revenue driver or strategic vertical. Public primes (Lockheed Martin, RTX, etc.) are included as reference points, not comprehensive coverage - **Founders**: operators, technologists, and executives building the covered companies - **Funds**: venture and growth firms with an active defence-tech thesis or meaningful portfolio exposure - **Contracts**: DoD, DHS, and allied-nation awards above $10M ceiling (or any value if strategically notable) - **Programs**: active U.S. and EU defence programmes with budget allocation and industrial participation The index does not claim to be exhaustive. We prioritise depth (cross-linking, cap tables, sourcing) over breadth of coverage.

Verification & Confidence

Every claim carries a confidence badge: - **Verified**: confirmed directly from a primary source (official contract announcement, SEC filing, company press release) - **Reported**: sourced from reputable secondary reporting (industry media, analyst notes) with attribution - **Estimated**: derived from public signals (e.g., ownership percentages inferred from round sizes and known investors) and clearly labelled as such All sources are cited inline with a direct URL and publication date so readers can independently verify.

Cross-Linking & Cap Tables

Entities are linked across axes so you can navigate freely: - A company page lists its founders, investors, contracts, and cap table - A founder page lists their companies and affiliated funds - A fund page lists its portfolio and partners - A contract page links to the recipient, subcontractors, and parent programme - A programme page links to participants and funded contracts Cap tables are reconstructed from public disclosures (regulatory filings, investor announcements, press coverage). Ownership percentages marked as 'estimated' are calculated from available round data and should be treated as directional, not definitive. Round-by-round history captures dilution and valuation evolution when disclosed.
