Karl Friston is a British theoretical neurobiologist and Professor of Neuroscience at UCL, where he serves as Scientific Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging. He is best known for inventing statistical parametric mapping (SPM), voxel-based morphometry, and dynamic causal modelling, and for originating the Free Energy Principle and active inference — the theoretical framework underlying Stanhope AI's approach to real-world, adaptive AI. He co-founded Stanhope AI in 2023 as a UCL/King's College London spin-out alongside CEO Rosalyn Moran, contributing the neuroscience theory behind the company's 'world model' technology. Friston is a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 2006) and one of the most highly cited living neuroscientists.
