Tan co-founded IQM Quantum Computers in 2018 as a spinout from Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, alongside Jan Goetz, Mikko Mottonen, and Juha Vartiainen, serving as its inaugural Chief Technology Officer. He holds a PhD in quantum computing from the University of New South Wales (Sydney) and conducted semiconductor/superconducting-qubit research there and at Aalto's QCD Labs, previously working at Microsoft on large-scale quantum computer development. In 2020 he and Goetz received Finland's Young Researcher Entrepreneur of the Year award, and he was named CTO of the Year in 2023 by the Technology Industries of Finland. He has since moved on from IQM's day-to-day leadership: in 2026 he joined Peter Sarlin's quantum-AI startup QuTwo as a co-founder, and since September 2025 has served as Advisor and Head of Models at Mission Grey.
