Martin Tomlinson
Emeritus Professor at the University of Plymouth and co-founder/CSO of Post-Quantum; known for Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding, with prior work applying error-correction research from satellite communications to cryptography at L3-TRL.
Martin Tomlinson earned his PhD in adaptive equalisation for data transmission from Loughborough University in 1970. He worked at Plessey Telecommunications Research, then at the Satellite Communications Division of the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE, now part of QinetiQ), where he was project manager for the NATO IV satellite's communications payload and, in this era, co-invented Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding, a nonlinear pre-equalization technique still widely used in digital transmission. In 1982 he joined the University of Plymouth as head of the Communication Engineering Department, later becoming Emeritus Professor of Communications and a member of its Centre for Security, Communications and Networks (CSCAN) group. He also directed L3-TRL (formerly TRL Technology, now L3Harris TRL), a UK defense-electronics firm supplying hardware cryptography, from 1997 to 2006. He co-founded Post-Quantum with Andersen Cheng and Cen Jung 'CJ' Tjhai, applying his research to post-quantum-resistant encryption, and serves as its Chief Scientific Officer.
