Mikko Möttönen is an Academy Professor in Aalto University's Department of Applied Physics, where he leads the Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD) research group. He received his doctorate in 2005 from the Department of Applied Physics at the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University), and in 2019 was appointed to a professorship in Quantum Technology shared by Aalto University and VTT. He co-founded IQM Quantum Computers in 2018 as a spinout of quantum-computing research from Aalto University and VTT, serving as Chief Scientist until June 2026, when Dr. Inés de Vega was appointed to that role. He also co-founded and serves as Chief Scientist of QMill Oy, a second Aalto/VTT-linked quantum spinout. His honors include the Nokia Foundation Recognition Award (2020), the Väisälä Prize (2020), and being named Innovation Professor of the Year by the CTO Forum (2021).
