Toby Cubitt
CTO, Chief Science Officer, and co-founder of Phasecraft. BA from Cambridge; PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, Munich; postdocs at Bristol and Madrid; Royal Society University Research Fellow at Cambridge then UCL, where he is now Professor of Quantum Information and head of the Quantum Lab. Won the AHP-Birkhäuser Prize (2017) and the LMS Junior Whitehead Prize (2019).
Cubitt co-founded Phasecraft in 2019 alongside Ashley Montanaro (University of Bristol) and John Morton (UCL), spinning the company out of UCL and the University of Bristol after two decades of academic quantum-computing research. The founders launched Phasecraft because quantum hardware was, in Cubitt's words, "no longer just a toy system," creating an opening to build the algorithms needed to extract useful results from noisy, near-term quantum devices. As CTO and Chief Science Officer, Cubitt translates his theoretical-physics research into applied algorithm work at the company, while continuing to run his UCL research group in parallel.
