NGP Energy Capital
Dallas-based private equity firm investing across natural resources (oil & gas, midstream, mineral/royalty interests) and energy transition (renewables, electrification, carbon management).
NGP Energy Capital Management (originally Natural Gas Partners) was co-founded in November 1988 by Kenneth Hersh, David Albin, Richard Rainwater, and Gamble Baldwin as an oil-and-gas private equity fund; it has since broadened into two practice areas — Natural Resources (upstream, midstream, mineral/royalty acquisitions) and Energy Transition (renewables, electrification, efficiency, carbon management, data-center infrastructure). Since 2012, The Carlyle Group has held a majority revenue-sharing interest in the firm while NGP continues to operate under its own name. NGP reports $25B in cumulative capital commitments since inception and has backed more than 300 development platforms across the energy sector. Current Managing Partner is Chris Carter; the Energy Transition practice — through which NGP invested in PhysicsX — is co-headed by Philip Deutch and Sam Stoutner.
