APFIT (Accelerate the Procurement and Fielding of Innovative Technologies)

A DoD contract vehicle specifically built to fund production scale-up for technology that's already been proven in prototype form — bridging the 'valley of death' between a successful demo and a fielded system.

Most DoD contract vehicles fund either early-stage prototyping (OTA) or ongoing task orders against a broad ceiling (IDIQ). APFIT fills a narrower, specific gap: production scale-up money for a technology that has already been demonstrated and works, but hasn't yet been funded to move from a handful of prototype units to a producible quantity.

The "valley of death" it's built to solve

A non-traditional contractor can win a successful OTA prototype and still stall out afterward — the government is satisfied the technology works, but no line item exists yet to fund building it at scale. This gap between "proven" and "fielded" is commonly called the valley of death, and APFIT exists specifically to bridge it, rather than to fund new research or early prototyping.

What an APFIT award looks like in practice

APFIT awards are typically smaller than headline IDIQ ceilings — commonly in the tens of millions of dollars — and are explicitly tied to scaling production capacity for a specific already-proven system, not open-ended R&D. On Defense Tech Atlas, Quantum Systems, Darkhive, Seasats, and Anello Photonics all hold APFIT awards for exactly this kind of production-scaling work. See the DoD contract vehicles explainer for how APFIT compares to OTA, IDIQ, and SBIR/STTR.
