Dual-use technology

Technology with both civilian and military applications built into the same underlying capability — not simply a company that sells to both markets separately.

Dual-use, in its original and narrower sense, refers to technology with both civilian and military applications built into the same underlying capability — not a company that happens to sell to both markets with different products. A drone autopilot stack that flies the same way whether the payload is a camera for agricultural surveying or a sensor for a military ISR mission is dual-use in the strict sense.

This differs from "dual-market, not dual-use": a company selling a defense-specific product and a separate civilian product, often to diversify revenue or appear more venture-fundable, but where the two products aren't the same underlying technology.
